I fucking love grappling

I wish I lived near that Gracie jiu-jitsu school in North London. I love great grappling. I love doing it, I love watching it. I went back to my friend's martial arts club tonight and we were grappling. You don't realise how much you pick up by watching instructional tapes and UFC but you pick up a lot. We did the usual hard workout followed by some grappling techniques and then some ground sparring. I went up with Tony and shot on him straight away. I dominated, I went after a choke submission and we rolled for a while. I tried an armbar but I was being too obvious. I tried a bit of misdirection, going for something to advance my position and it ended up in a bad triangle choke from me. I couldn't get it synched but it worked as when I adjusted the position, he fell into a textbook armbar. I was so stoked. I went up against Chris next and was gassed just as I couldn't get a choke in. Good fight, he's no pushover and it was called a draw. Me and Rich went around and I acquitted myself well. He's a judo black belt, I'm a schmoe. He submitted me and I came out with some credit.

All in all, an enjoyable night despite being knackered.

Around the time I left Barking (2000) there was a Gracie Jiu Jitsu gym opening in that area, a stones throw away from the University Of East London. Dunno if that's still running or not.

There are two

One in Dagenham and the other in Finchley I think. Both are like 3 hour round trips via train and tube for me.
